CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

TENEBRIS

I hold Onmiel for hours until the sun is high in the sky and finally dipping again. She sleeps the entire time, snoring softly with her fists wrapped in my shirt. I use that time to think because what we’re doing, this isn’t friendship. This is so much more, and I’m struggling with how I’ve gone from being destroyed over killing my bondmate to wanting another woman in a relatively short time.

My direwolf sits up and growls when I think of Rama. He begins to pace in my chest anxiously.

Hurt. She hurt. His voice is deep, his words broken. I’ve never heard of anything like this.

Who’s hurt? I question, wondering if I can speak with him and if we can have an honest-to-gods conversation. I’ve never heard of a shifter being able to do this. Our wolves are more of a sensation than anything.

Hurt me, he snarls into my mind. Bondmate hurt me. Cruel mate. Bad mate.

A sense of wrongness washes over me in waves that choke the breath from my lungs. There’s so much anguish that threatens to break loose. I have so many questions. How did she hurt him? What exactly did she do? And why? Did she know my direwolf was different? Would I have eventually become another experiment to her? Did the fucking bond matter at all? Does it even matter now? If I start something with Onmiel, will the bond tear it apart?

I’m unsettled that I don’t have an answer for any of that.

Onmiel shifts in my arms, stirring, and when I go to move away, my direwolf startles and pushes up against my ribs. Take. Hurt go away.

Wait, is he still hurting? I ponder the question, but he doesn’t answer. Onmiel’s beautiful eyes pop open, going wide when she looks at me and scoots back. “What’s wrong? You look worried…”

“Nothing,” I murmur, standing to go to the window and look out. “You’ve been asleep all day, Onmiel. Are you hungry? Can I get you anything?” My direwolf preens in my chest as I rub at it, wondering what the hells is going on with him.

When she rises and stretches, joining me, I sit in the window seat.

“Have you ever heard of an alpha’s direwolf having a separate consciousness from his?”

Onmiel startles, glancing to where I’m still rubbing absentmindedly at my pecs. “Is that happening to you?”

I confirm with a slight nod.

She sighs, gritting her teeth. “Maybe a mate bond thing?”

Hearing her say the word mate sends me growling and my direwolf preening for attention. Onmiel blanches. “I’m sorry to bring her up, Ten.”

“You don’t have to dance around that topic with me, Onmiel,” I reassure her. “He didn’t start speaking to me until this week. I find that significant.”

She folds her arms over her knees and pulls them to her chest, away from me. My direwolf snaps in my chest, hating how she folds in on herself. Gods, he’s going to get insufferable shortly.

“Maybe that takes a while to develop after you mate someone,” she whispers.
